SunStar File photo March 04, 2021 A DAVAO City councilor is urging her colleagues to hold in abeyance all the new applicants and renewal of permits for quarry operations but retain those that have existing permits to operate until the result of the study on Davao s river resources is already available. Huge basking shark washes up on Maine shore

Author: Gabrielle Mannino (NEWS CENTER Maine) Published: 4:29 PM CST January 5, 2021 Updated: 10:43 AM CST January 6, 2021 BREMEN, MAINE, Maine A 26-foot male basking shark washed up on the shore of Greenland Cove in Bremen Tuesday morning, the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) tells NEWS CENTER Maine.  DMR Science Bureau staff and Marine Patrol arrived on scene around 9:30 a.m. after being notified by local fishermen. There is no known cause of death at this time.  DMR staff took samples of the shark, which they say will be used to conduct dietary, aging, and genetic analysis. DMR spokesperson Jeff Nichols says the Department has recently joined in a collaborative research effort known as the New England White Shark Research Consortium to study white sharks and will be working with members of the Consortium to conduct this analysis.

A Final 2020 DMR Update from Commissioner Keliher As 2020 slowly draws to a close, I’d like to share with you one last monthly update on the work of Maine DMR before we close the books on a year of challenges. Pat. Policy and Management Bureau The New England Fishery Management Council met on December 1-3 via webinar. Much of the current work of the Council is focused on identifying specifications for fishing year 2021, including catch limits for the federal scallop, whiting, and spiny dogfish fisheries. The Council did take final action on groundfish catch limits for FY2021 as a part of Framework 61. The Council will continue work on Framework 61 in January when it is slated to take final action on a redfish universal sector exemption.
