(Breeze photo by Jacquelyn Moorehead) SMITHFIELD – Three students will share the top of the class this year with two co-valedictorians, Maximilian Chelminski and Cameron Kasbarian, and a salutatorian, Victoria Richard, as Smithfield High School transitions out of its traditional class ranking system. SHS Principal Dan Kelley said the year was already challenging enough, and students kept the competition tight for top rankings. He said he was proud of the school’s top three, who persevered among a class of 165 students.

AUTREY MILL MIDDLE SCHOOL WINS 4TH IN STATE COMPETITION

The Autrey Mill Middle School Science Olympiad team participated in the state science competition at the University of Georgia last weekend cinching  4th place. The AMMS team, led by Science teacher Kayla Garner, consisted of 30 dedicated students in grades six through eight. Garner had this to say, “Our Science Olympiad students have done fabulously in their individual events: despite the unique challenges this academic year has presented.  I appreciate our students’ flexibility and patience as Science Olympiad competed virtually for the first time.  Students were able to quickly troubleshoot any technical issues that occurred during testing and devoted a great deal of time each week to prepare for the events.”

Juanita Haugen Memorial Scholarship Recipients

Community of Character Collaborative announces Juanita Haugen Memorial Scholarship Recipients Four high school seniors have been selected by the Community of Character Collaborative as recipients of the 2021 Juanita Haugen Memorial Scholarship. Applicants were required to explain how their actions have reflected any or all of the six characteristics adopted by the Pleasanton Unified School District, City of Pleasanton, the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce and other faith and organizations: compassion, honesty, respect, responsibility, integrity, and self-discipline. These values are often represented through their service and community involvement. The scholarship was created to honor the memory of Juanita Haugen, founder of the collaborative, who died in 2007 due to cancer. Mrs. Haugen was a former president not only of the local school board, but also of the California School Boards Association. Students from each of the Pleasanton high schools graduating classes is eligible to a
