Fed up with changing state guidelines, some of which he says are guided by politics instead of medicine, the local school superintendent is calling for a countywide advocacy campaign.
In the wake of new California Department of Public Health guidelines mandating students be no fewer than 4 feet from their classmates, Del Norte County Unified School District Jeff Harris said he wanted to urge families to send a letter to the governor and the Legislature describing how response to the COVID-19 pandemic has affected them.

Recall effort targets 2 Benicia school trustees; Vaca council may be next
FAIRFIELD Two members of the Benicia School District board have been targeted for recall, and the county Registrar of Voters Office has received recall inquiries about the Vacaville City Council.
John Gardner, the assistant registrar of voters, said Thursday the office is just waiting for proof that the notice of intention to circulate a recall petition has been published to give the final OK to collect signatures in Benicia.
The trustees who are the subject of the recall are Sheri Zada, who represents Trustee Area 1, and Mark Maselli, who represents Trustee Area 4. Both have terms that end in 2022.
YCCD Area 4 Trustee provisionally appointed Trustee Jennifer Nicolau
With the resignation of Area 4 Trustee, Anne DeMartini, from the Yosemite Community College District (YCCD) Board of Trustees, effective Jan. 3, the Board of Trustees has filled the vacancy by provisional appointment. In accordance with Education Code Section 5091, Jennifer M. Nicolau was provisionally appointed to the YCCD Board on Feb. 16, through an interview process in which all five trustee applicants were interviewed. Unless a petition is filed containing a sufficient number of signatures with the Stanislaus County Office of Education within 30 days of the provisional appointment, it shall become effective.
Should the provisional appointment become effective, Nicolau may serve until the results of the next regularly scheduled election for governing board members in November 2022 are finalized. The Area 4 position will be up for a full four-year term in the November 20

After COVID-19 ended a year-long stalemate last spring over salaries and health benefits, the Del Norte Teachers Association is gearing up for negotiations over the entire three-year contract.
