Irvine Legion branch back open as lockdown eases

LEGION: Members were glad to get back into the Irvine club for a few pints as lockdown measures eased Irvine’s Legion branch has finally reopened officially to members as lockdown eases after a new drop-in service was launched for veterans. The Royal British Legion branch on West Road is now officially back open to cater for Irvine’s ex-military men and women – with opening times from 12 noon until 10.30pm – with last orders at 10pm. Branch Secretary Arlene Reid said: “That’s us back in business – COVID regulations applying – but it’s great to see members back in the club enjoying themselves.

Quilters display heirloom treasures in Gilbert

Their creations often have stories attached to them, or its fabric tells the stories of yesteryear.  The quilt show currently running through end of May at HD SOUTH, the home of the Gilbert Historical Museum, displays many such treasures. It is open free of charge on Memorial Day. The all-volunteer quilting bee within the museum accepts community quilts to complete and helps raise funds for the organization.  Over the years, it has basted many heirlooms. Basting means making backing, adding batting and attaching the quilt top to complete the layers of a quilt. This is an important step in the process and is done by hand.

Irvine’s Legion branch has now kicked off its new drop-in days for members as lockdown eases. The branch launched the drop in days for members to get back in the building as the ex-service men and woman await the return to normality. The Royal British Legion Scotland branch, which opened back up as per government guidelines on April 26, will be hosting a drop in on Mondays and Fridays 11am–2pm for members, veterans, their families and serving members of the Armed Forces. Branch Secretary Arlene Reid said: “We’re going to try it and see how it goes, we can’t get the bar open yet but it won’t be long after. We’re opening as a drop in because obviously everyone’s been isolated for so long it will give them a chance to catch up with us and see what’s been happening.
