Members of Grace Cathedral in Ohio wept openly in the sanctuary as leaders announced the death of their controversial founding pastor, televangelist Ernest Angley Friday. He was 99.
“First off, we’d like to thank all of you for praying for Rev. Angley, and Rev. Angley made so many sacrifices for all of us, and he showed us so much love,” began Grace Cathedral’s Rev. Steve Millar in a Friday night service broadcast on Facebook.
“But Rev. Angley, because of his decline this past week, around 4:30 today went to Heaven. Rev. Angley was our father, our pastor. He was an author,” he announced through sniffling as audible weeping erupted from the congregation in the background.

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio (AP) Ohio-based televangelist Ernest Angley has died at age 99, according to the self-named ministry he led for decades.
Angley, whose base of operation was Grace Cathedral in Cuyahoga Falls outside Akron, died on Friday. A cause of death was not released.
Born in Gastonia, North Carolina, Angley achieved a level of fame for his broadcasts recorded at a television station owned by his ministry, his distinctive speaking voice and his overseas mission trips. His ministry purchased a Boeing 747 in the mid-2000s.
An investigation by the Akron Beacon Journal in 2014 concluded that Angley controlled congregation members by advising them not to have children, shunning those who left the church and using free labor at his for-profit buffet restaurant and television station.

AKRON, Ohio The Rev. Ernest W. Angley, a faith-healing Pentecostal televangelist who claimed a lifetime of personal visits from God, died Friday at age 99, according to an announcement on the website of his Cuyahoga Falls-based ministry.
The preacher rose over the decades from tent revivalist to running a world-wide ministry with his namesake from what would be a vast home base in suburban Akron. Delivering his sermons in his distinctive drawl, Angley was one of the most influential modern-day faith healers and televangelists, though not as flashy as some of his contemporaries.
