Cards’ Nine Salvages Series, Sweeps Double Dip
Share this story
The U of L Nine’s seriously important weekend series against the dudes from the Land o’ Crash Davis had, shall we say, an inauspicious beginning.
After Friday night Cardinal ace Michael Kirian’s first 7 pitches in front of increased attendance at The Jim, Louisville was down, 0-3.
It was only the beginning of troubles.
Meanwhile Duke hurler Jack Savoy, if not exactly Ebby Calvin LaLoosh after Annie Savoy fixed his mechanics, did go seven, surrendering just 4 hits and a lone run.
After a disastrous weekend at Clemson, where the Cards came away clobbered Dabo-style, they had bounced back Tuesday against the Commodores. Yet Louisville’s necessary midweek W over vaunted Vanderbilt had nary a smidgen of carry over effect.
Hitters streaks of homering in consecutive games By JohnW53 on May 8, 2021, 4:48am CDT +
Only the Yankees (16,350) and Giants (14,804) have hit more.
The Cubs have hit at least 1 homer in as many as
17 consecutive games. They have homered in at least
10 straight games
5 games in a row.
Intriguingly, neither have the Braves, who had hit the fourth most total homers, 14,047.
Nor have the Dodgers, Phillies or Reds. That makes 5 of the 8 National League teams that existed before 1962. The record for all 5 teams is 5.
.
On the other hand, the Padres had a streak of 6 by Graig Nettles in 1984.
Morgan Ensberg homered in 6 straight games for the Astros in 2006, when they still were in the NL.
Ernie Banksâ 500th Home Run was Highlight of Eventful 1970 Cub Season, Says Author of New Book From: Mr. Cub Ernie Banks 500
th home run was the highlight of the very eventful 1970 Chicago Cubs baseball season, says William S. Bike, author of the new book
The Forgotten 1970 Chicago Cubs: Go and Glow, recently published by The History Press. The anniversary of that historic homer is May 12.
It s hard to pick a number one moment from a season that saw the Cubs put five players on the field who would go on to make the Hall of Fame and the closest pennant race featuring the Cubs in the last 80 years, but the one that Cub fans rememberâeven if they weren t born yetâis Mr. Cub s 500
Steals by Cubs first basemen and pitchers By JohnW53 on May 6, 2021, 7:20am CDT +
A previous post documented the 10 steals of home by Cubs catchers since 1920.
That post also noted that the Cubs have had exactly 500 steals of any base by their catchers during the entire Modern Era, which began in 1901.
That got me thinking about 2 other positions not usually associated with stolen bases: first base and pitcher.
....
MISSING SPLITS
Finding the number of steals at a specific fielding position for players during the Dead Ball Era proved challenging
Baseball-reference.com does not have career splits by position for many of those, and incomplete splits for others.

Little to no movement in these markets this morning.
Good Day… And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! It’s also Cinco de Mayo! More on that in the wrap up at the end of the letter today… Yesterday it was May the 4th be with you, and today it’s Cinco de Mayo, and tomorrow it will just be May 6th… Oh well, just another day! But that’s tomorrow, we need to live for today! Because only today is promised to us… I, unfortunately, feel like death warmed over this morning, as my cold has taken a turn for the worst. Tommy Tutone greets me this morning with his song: 867-5309. Sort of like 634-5709 the R&B song from the 60 s!
