2021 s draft will be Ernie Adams last with Patriots May 01, 2021 at 09:19 PM Copied!
Bill Belichick, speaking with reporters after the Patriots draft had wrapped up on Saturday evening, announced that 2021 will be long-time football research director Ernie Adams last draft with the team. Belichick stopped short of saying Adams was retiring completely but pointed out how involved Adams had been in the team s draft process over the last two decades where his loss will reverberate. Just to kind of wrap up the day, with Ernie Adams, this is [his] last draft, and certainly he s been a huge part of the draft process with the New England Patriots, going all the way to Coach [Chuck] Fairbanks to the Giants to Cleveland, back to New England. The acquisition of a lot of great players, all the process that goes into drafting, grading players, scouting players, setting up a grading scale, trading really every single thing that is involved in that. BB: I m going to have to make this quicker tonight. It s interesting how it always is on the draft. Stevenson, a big back from Oklahoma, hasn t had a lot of carries, think he s certainly a player that s got a lot of good football in front of him. Kind of unusual to go back-to-back from Alabama and Oklahoma, but that s just the way it worked out. As always, really appreciate the cooperation from Coach [Nick] Saban and the University of Alabama staff and the same thing at Oklahoma with Coach [Lincoln] Riley and his outstanding staff as well.
5. Vera-Tucker = Wynn: Southern California offensive tackle/guard Alijah Vera-Tucker is considered one of the safest picks in a draft considered risky because of opt-outs, the lack of a traditional combine and prospect visits, etc. Former longtime NFL general manager Bill Polian looked to the Patriots for a comparison, saying on SiriusXM NFL Radio that this would be Isaiah Wynn same body type, kind of a blocky guy [6-foot-3, 315 pounds]. Can play tackle and guard. The Patriots have until May 3 to decide whether to pick up Wynn s fifth-year option for 2022, which would guarantee him about $10.5 million. If not for some of Wynn s health struggles, the decision would be a no-brainer (my hunch is the team still picks up the option). Selecting Vera-Tucker would represent another layer of insurance.
