Reddit garnered a lot of attention on Sunday for running the shortest Super Bowl ad in history, coming in at just five seconds. The ad was nothing flashy, just text on screen that could only be read if one were to pause the TV, which they acknowledged in the ad. The sole purpose of the ad was seemingly to give a shout out to the Redditers who recently banned together and wreaked havoc on Wall Street, even if just for a short amount of time. With ad time running at roughly $5.5 million for a 30 second spot, the ad admitted that they could only pay for a fraction of that 30 seconds, but felt inspired to do so by the Reddit community. “Big game spots are expensive, so we couldn’t buy a full one. But we were inspired and decided to spend our entire marketing budget on 5 seconds of airtime,” the ad reads. “One thing we learned from our communities last week is that underdogs can accomplish just about anything when they come together around a common idea.”

On Sunday, February 7, people were glued to their screens in the US for the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL). Utilising this opportunity, Reddit like many others, advertised their brand during the commercial breaks in the Super Bowl.
With a unique 5-second ad, hinting towards GameStop and AMC Entertainment, Reddit’s message said that they have learnt the underdogs can achieve anything if they come together around a common idea. A Reddit community named WallStreetBets had surged the stocks of GameStop. As per the ad, the company has spent their entire marketing budget on this one commercial.
