Disappointed over the inquiry being conducted into the 2018 Thoothukudi firing that claimed the lives of 13 people protesting against Sterlite Copper, Madurai-based NGO People’s Watch has asked the government to constitute a fresh commission of inquiry.
Its Executive Director Henri Tiphagne said that paying compensation and providing employment alone to the dependent of the deceased cannot deliver justice to the families. Those responsible for opening fire have to be identified.
The government should ask the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court to monitor the CBI investigation. The CBI should periodically report to the court, he said.
Rajinikanth
TUTICORIN: The Justice (retired) Aruna Jagadeesan Commission probing the police-firing on the anti-Sterlite protesters in Tuticorin in May 2018 that claimed 14 lives has summoned actor Rajinikanth to appear before it on January 19, during its 24th sitting.
Rajinikanth has been asked to appear before the commission at its Tuticorin camp office at 10am on January 19.
The reason for summoning the actor is his comment after visiting the riot-hit city on May 30, 2018, that “intrusion of anti-social elements” was the reason for the mob turning violent which forced police to open fire. Rajinikanth said he knew who were behind it and he would reveal it at the right place.
