Can Jeffersontown mayor win Louisville mayor s race for GOP?

View Comments On the evening of May 23, 1969, your humble columnist graduated from Trinity High School at the Louisville Gardens auditorium, an old armory on Walnut Street (since renamed Muhammed Ali Boulevard). A few blocks away from that celebration was City Hall, where Louisville’s mayor may have been turning out the lights in his office. The mayor that year was one Kenneth A. “Kenny” Schmied, a Republican. He had succeeded another Republican mayor, William O. “Bill” Cowger who, prohibited by law from running for a second term, had been elected to represent Louisville in Congress. More than 52 years after I received that diploma, Louisville hasn’t had another Republican mayor since the end of Schmied’s term. Jeffersontown mayor joins growing list of candidates in Louisville mayoral race

Bill Dieruf, mayor of Jeffersontown, to run for Louisville mayor

View Comments Longtime Jeffersontown Mayor Bill Dieruf will launch a bid for mayor of Louisville next week, according to a Thursday news release. Dieruf has served as mayor of the suburban Jefferson County city for three terms and also has been president of the Jefferson County and Kentucky leagues of cities. At 2 p.m. June 9 at Jeffersontown s Veterans Memorial Park, he will offer details on his plans to bring successes in Jeffersontown during his tenure to the larger stage of Louisville Metro Government, the release said. Dieruf previously told The Courier Journal he is a registered Republican. He will likely be a frontrunner for the GOP s nomination in the primary election next year.
