Backlash over the giant statue of Marilyn Monroe returning to Palm Springs, California, has resulted in months of debate, protests and an online petition garnering tens of thousands of signatures.
The 26-foot tall Forever Marilyn was first displayed in downtown Palm Springs between 2012 and 2014, becoming a major tourist attraction.
The statue captures one of the most iconic movie moments of all time Monroe on a subway grate as her white dress is blown upwards when a train passes, seen in 1955 movie

Letters: Losing faith in Palm Springs City Hall

Losing faith in City Hall
Thanks to the Desert Sun for getting it right with the editorial “Council blindsided public on fireworks” (May 13). First, there was no hearing on the proposed Museum Way street closure to accommodate the Marilyn Monroe statue and, now, no hearing on the proposal to cancel July Fourth fireworks. Many of us who keep an eye on Palm Springs City Hall don’t sit around looking for reasons to feel cynical about government, but sadly politicians keep acting in ways that undermine our faith.

Statue not a good use of money
As a winter resident of Palm Springs and a homeowner, I find it somewhat disturbing that the city’s council has approved a considerable amount of taxpayers’ money around the purchase, transport and erection of the Marilyn sculpture.
Many in the community are upset at this project. Beyond the arguments around culture and the objectification of the female form, all valid points, it seems even more remarkable that having constructed a new road and named it “Museum Way,” at considerable expense, that that road will now be altered in order to accommodate this new attraction.

Does last week’s decision to cancel Palm Springs’ July 4 fireworks mean no pyrotechnics ever again?
After all, the issues raised by those who supported cancelling including the effect the noise has on pets and some people, including those with PTSD aren’t unique to 2021 or to the holiday.
So it seems logical to conclude the show is over for good.
Unfortunately, we can’t say for sure, because the City Council vote to end a 50-year tradition came out of nowhere.
Even though it happened during a public meeting and after an alleged debate, it was a textbook example of how not to conduct the people’s business.
