Parts of Flagstaff sustained unprecedented flooding this week as strong monsoon storms hit the area.
Homes near the base of Mt. Elden have been particularly prone to flooding since the 2019 Museum Fire. KNAU’s Angela Gervasi caught up with Kathy Lozania, a resident of the Sunnyside neighborhood, as she and her husband dug out of the mud with the rest of their neighbors.
“This is a main drag that all the water was coming from the fire,” Lozania told KNAU on Wednesday. “Yesterday, about this time, we were sitting here watching all the trees and all the garbage cans and everything just floating down, and we couldn’t believe it. You know. It was really bad.”

It makes up to $200,000 available for response efforts. It comes after several area roads below the 2019 Museum Fire burn scar flowed with monsoon runoff after inches of rain fell in short periods of time on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Flagstaff Mayor Paul Deasy and Coconino County Board of Supervisors Chair Matt Ryan yesterday declared states of emergency to expand emergency funds and request assistance from the state.
Meanwhile, Coconino County flood officials say a dozen homes and garages have sustained interior flooding in the Museum Flood Area along with 15 homes in the Upper East Flagstaff area.
Gov. Doug Ducey issued a declaration of emergency on Friday in response to flash flooding in Coconino County.
Ducey’s declaration opens the use of $200,000 worth of state funds to the county.
Flagstaff Public Works Director Andy Bertelson says the burn scar from 2019’s Museum Fire saw heavy rain.
“We received 2 inches of rain, I believe, at the highest impact, about an inch of rain in 15 minutes in that one location. That’s a real event in that location, and as a result, we saw that debris discharge in the system,” said Bertelson.
Some areas of Flagstaff reported rushing flood water about 1 foot deep, and the city issued shelter in place orders both Wednesday and Thursday.
