Michael Engel to deliver Inaugural Distinguished Professor Lecture

Fri, 04/23/2021 LAWRENCE A University of Kansas expert on the evolutionary history and diversity of insects will present his distinguished professor Inaugural Lecture, “400 Million Years on Six Legs: Evolution of the Insects,” on Thursday, April 29.  Michael Engel is a University Distinguished Professor of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and senior curator in the KU Biodiversity Institute, a rank he has held since 2018. He is also a courtesy professor in the Department of Geology and the Museum Studies Program. The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. and be recorded for those unable to attend the virtual event and posted to the Faculty Development website. Individuals can register to attend the virtual Zoom webinar.

April 22, 2021 12:00 a.m. Lisa Diaz Louis is a native New Yorker and current student in the online MA in Museum Studies program at the CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS). She considers herself a “backyard tourist,” always exploring the cultural happenings around the city. Throughout the 15 years she spent working in the NYC foster care and shelter systems, she took notice of how little exposure the youth had to arts and culture. When CUNY SPS announced they were partnering with the New-York Historical Society to offer a Museum Studies degree, she knew the program would give her the opportunity to blend her two passions: the love of museums and helping others.

April 17-25 is also National Park Week, which features special programs, events and digital experiences focused on the natural world. Celebrate this year’s official Earth Day theme, “Together, We Can Restore Our Earth,” and activate change for good with many in-person options in the Bay Area, as well as virtual offerings for all. San Francisco has planned a second year of celebrating the holiday virtually with a robust lineup of dynamic speakers, live music, “artivism” and a sustainable chef’s zone. The city of Oakland has made an online hub to find local community actions for residents to participate in on their website.
