Everyone knows what a Viking is, or at least has seen one on TV. But how did these ragtag, tough travelers, who were infamous for raiding and trading from ancient Constantinople to the northeastern shores of North America, come to be? That is exactly what “The Vikings Begin,” exhibit is trying to explain. The exhibit, made up of almost all original items, traveled outside of Sweden for the first time to be displayed at Montana State University’s Museum of the Rockies. It first opened to the public on May 29. “The exhibition shows us a warlike people as we’d expect,” said Neil Price, curator and professor of archaeology at Uppsala University in Sweden. “But it’s also a sophisticated and diverse culture with a complicated outlook on the world.”
