New NAU president pledges to boost graduation rates

Northern Arizona University s incoming president, an engineer who helped lead one of the world s largest urban universities, lists among his goals a pledge to boost Native American and Hispanic graduation rates. He officially will step into the job on June 14. But he said work on the transition   to blaze the trail to the bold future that awaits us   will begin immediately. Dr. José Luis Cruz was appointed unanimously on Wednesday by the Arizona Board of Regents, which oversees the state s three public universities. Cruz praised the rigorous selection process and thanked the students, faculty, tribal leaders, elected officials and Flagstaff residents who asked thoughtful questions and shared concerns while he was applying.

The Pima County Health Department announced Wednesday in a news release that the university s state-run mass vaccination site has provided the county with 1,000 much-needed doses of the coronavirus vaccine. The Moderna doses were originally allocated to U of A to administer but will now be used by the county to increase its vaccination efforts in marginalized and high-risk areas. We are grateful to University of Arizona President Robert Robbins for sharing this resource with us, Chuck Huckelberry, Pima County Administrator, said in a statement. This supply is going to do immediate good in helping us get vaccine into the hardest to reach parts of our community.

(KOLD News 13) - Pima County Health Department will receive an additional 1,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine.
