Palestinians, allies keep up fight against Israeli apartheid
By Martha Grevatt posted on May 27, 2021
Across the U.S., the Palestine solidarity movement has stayed in the streets rallying, marching and chanting “Free, free Palestine.” Recurring themes include the demand to cut all U.S. aid to Israel and assertions that a cease-fire is not enough, the occupation must end, and that “it is not a ‘conflict,’ it is genocide.”
The suffering of the Palestinian people has gone on for generations being bombed, arrested, evicted from their homes and villages and without ability to move or worship freely. They are in a constant state of siege, as Israel bombs civilians with bare seconds of warning. Israel controls the flow of food, electricity and water.
A number of trade union federations, unions and other organisations supported the actions in Durban.
The action followed a call by the Palestine General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) for workers and trade unions to “refuse to unload [Israeli] ships and goods from sea and airports”.
Zim Lines is not an impartial maritime company: it has a history of shipping Israeli armaments and supporting Israeli apartheid. The company was established after WWII as a carrier of Jewish settlers to ports in Palestine and played a significant logistical role in the Israeli occupation of Palestine. During the 1947–49 war, Zim Lines supplied freight and military equipment to the State of Israel.
UPDATE ON BLOCK THE BOAT IN THE US: Another apartheid-profiteering, Zim-operated ship is scheduled to dock at the port of Oakland on Saturday, May 29th. Let’s show them that the Bay Area stands with Palestine! Sign up for our text alert system for updates 181-BLOCKZIM
