It has been a challenging year for businesses across the country. Pandemic restrictions have significantly reduced occupancy and revenues. Small businesses in Vermont are struggling, and nearly every industry has been impacted. Some, like restaurants and lodging properties, were hit hardest. And the hits keep coming.
The pandemic, which started in spring of this year, continues, and Vermont remains in a state of emergency. This month, Vermont broke its own record for single-day COVID cases.

Dec. 17 Pierce County Superior Court has started an eviction resolution program before moratoriums in response to the COVID-19 pandemic end. Currently there are both federal and state mandates suspending evictions based on the non-payment of rent, the court said in a news release Thursday. Once those mandates end, Pierce County expects a large number of eviction cases to be filed in Superior Court.
Gov. Jay Inslee s eviction moratorium and the federal eviction moratorium are both set to expire Dec. 31.

Thousands of Americans are still out of work and a federal eviction moratorium expires at the end of the year. Florida Apartment Association says some landlords are trying to keep people in their homes. The group represents around 800,000 units across the state of Florida. Amanda Gill is their Government Affairs Director. She says during the pandemic most of the association’s members have tried to help tenants who are out of work. For example, they might be offering month to month leases where perhaps in the past they didn’t do that. They might be offering payment plan arrangements with residents who can’t pay at this time or rent deferment for a resident who’s waiting for their unemployment to kick in, said Gill. They’re providing unprecedented flexibility and they’re also helping residents often times apply for rent relief funds.
