Essex man should try reading this paper before sending in letters

I ASSUME that R French is a man, and the start of his letter looked as if it was going to be interesting. However he turns out to be just another delusional Englishman. Oh sorry, he doesn’t identify as being English, but as British! But let me answer some of the points he raises. Her Majesty the Queen, is not just the Queen of England or the UK but had a separate coronation as Queen of Scots and as such is the crowned head of state for Scotland, so can’t be considered a foreign national as Mr French implies if Scotland gains independence. However, there is little or no debate here that I know of about being a republic and abolishing the monarchy, and if so there would have to be a discussion and then presumably a referendum at some time in the future. The assertion that she will have to get rid of Balmoral is premature and hypothetical. Likewise his plans for Holyrood Palace.

Eileen Elliot – a towering figure in the world of yachting – dies aged 95

WELL known on the Island, national and international yachting scene, Eileen Elliot has died at the age of 95. Mrs Elliot s association with the Island goes back to the 1930s when her parents built The Wight House in Yarmouth. After leaving Upper Chine School in Shanklin, she joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service with her best friend, Bunty Minchin, and served at HMS Flowerdown intercepting German navy signals for decoding at Bletchley. Returning to Yarmouth on leave, she was able to wave at her father, Lieutenant-Commander George Cecil Hans Hamilton, as he sailed past on his way to serve as the beachmaster on Gold Beach during the invasion of France in 1944.

King Harald and Crown Prince Haakon inspect the Norwegian Royal Yacht

Photo: Oskar Aanmoen The summer season is officially underway for crew and officers on the Royal Norwegian Ship. On Thursday afternoon, King Harald and Crown Prince Haakon embarked the ship for inspection. The tradition of royal embarkation dates back to 1948 when King Haakon VII received ‘Norway’ as a gift from the Norwegian people. Due to the ongoing global health emergency, the 2021 sailing programme is not yet ready, but the Royal Yacht will be seen sailing along the Norwegian coast during the summer. During the ceremony, the King inspected this year’s crew. He also examined the ship and made sure everything was as it should be before having a short chat with the captain and another military commander on board the boat. The King then declared his official approval that everything was as it should be.

Scottish election: How the leaders did in their last debate

Scottish election: How the leaders did in their last debate Andrew Naughtie © Provided by The Independent Asked politely not to talk over each other for the next 70 minutes, the leaders of Scotland’s five largest parties all agreed – and for the first 40 minutes or so, they mostly behaved themselves. Their last debate before Thursday’s elections began with the all-engulfing Covid-19 response and incipient recovery, moved into the weeds of social care policy, and then detoured via a bizarre question on a mooted Royal Yacht to the constitutional question, at which point the evening’s politesse disintegrated. Sturgeon suggests Johnson is using Royal Yacht to distract attention away from sleaze
