ON A misty morning in the fall of 1943, radar watchers at an isolated air station on Canada’s northwest coast were hunched tensely over the viewing screens of their instruments. The radarscopes had revealed unidentified fliers in a sector 30 to 40 miles away where there were no friendly aircraft.
Singapore, the Philippines and a hefty slice of the Southwest Pacific had already fallen to the Japanese. Invasion of the Aleutians and Alaska had been expected for weeks.
