Gordon Barracks in Bridge of Don was a proud home to the Gordon Highlanders regiment for decades. Built in 1935, the Highlanders marched from their old base at Castlehill in Aberdeen city centre, up King Street and into the new Gordon Barracks at Bridge of Don. Both serving Gordon Highlanders and veterans took part in the opening ceremony of the barracks in 1935. The Marquis of Huntly and Brigadier General Hamilton carried out the inspection on the day.

WHENEVER she talks about her life in Glasgow, Jane Davies lights up at the mention of Sauchiehall Street. In the 50s and 60s, this was the grandest street of all, full of elegant department stores, stylish tearooms and beautiful boutiques. The 97-year-old can remember the old shops, and loves to tell her daughter Carol all about them. One particularly intrigued Carol, however, who is helping her mum compile memories of her life in Scotland and England. “My mum mentioned Smith’s, which had a spinning wheel on its shopfront, and said it was situated next to Daly’s department store,” says Carol.

Tributes to former Watford Harriers chairman Seymour Izzard

Readers have paid their respects to a chairman and long-standing member of Watford Harriers Athletics Club who passed away. Seymour Arthur Izzard died aged 89 after an impressive lifetime of smashing cross country marathons and inspiring younger athletes at the Woodside Stadium. He joined the Watford Harriers in 1948, which then kickstarted a series of achievements, ranging from representing the Royal Signals in cross country races in Catterick and Germany and becoming the Herts County Vets 10-mile and 20-mile road champion.
