Listening to the Chief Executive Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Opoku Ware Ampomah, there is no doubt that his life is a testament of hard work and dedication.
As the CEO of the biggest hospital in the country, Dr Ampomah is regarded as one of the best plastic surgeons in the world.
This feat, however, did not come on a silver platter as it involved a lot of sacrifices. While schooling in the United Kingdom, Dr Ampomah sometimes had to travel for long kilometres just to watch and help some of his senior colleagues perform surgeries.
A Statement from the Honourable Terrence Deyalsingh, Minister of Health on the passing of Professor Courtenay Bartholomew
Port of Spain, 8 May 2021: It is with sadness that I offer condolences, on behalf of myself, my family and all of us at the Ministry of Health to the family and loved ones of Professor Courtenay Bartholomew ORTT. Professor Bartholomew’s distinguished career was marked by trailblazing health research in the areas of HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Hepatitis A and B and scorpion sting venom.
In the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Professor Bartholomew founded the Medical Research Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago (MRFTT), which is currently the largest HIV/AIDS clinic in the country. The longstanding relationship between the Ministry of Health and MRFTT continues to this day. This partnership has redounded to the successful treatment of thousands of patients, bringing Trinidad and Tobago within range of the achievement of the UNAIDS 90-90-90 HIV treatment target.
When I entered medical school, I was determined to become a specialist.
I thought running a maternity home would give me independence, and so obstetrics and gynaecology (O&G) was one of the specialities I thought I would pursue upon graduation.
In fact, I remember a senior of mine, who, even before entering medical school, had decided that he wanted to be a neurosurgeon.
And indeed, he is now a successful neurosurgeon in private practice.
The medical school curriculum and learning was tough, and many of us were just struggling to pass exams while trying to enjoy university life with whatever minimal time we had left.
