The original home of The Phantom of the Opera, one of the West End’s flagship musicals and one of the most successful works of entertainment of all time (estimated to have reaped $6 billion since it launched in 1986), is undergoing a substantial renovation ahead of the show’s return there this summer. Intermittent banging and crashing is going on as I take an exclusive peek inside this beautiful late-Victorian playhouse, owned by Phantom’s composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. The show’s most famous fixture – the chandelier that comes swooping down over the audience’s heads in the first-half coup de théâtre – was photographed on the street outside last July, awaiting removal.
