State and feds to help Clarksburg test for lead in water

SUBMITTED PHOTO CHARLESTON — State health officials are encouraging Clarksburg water customers to have children age six and under tested for lead poisoning. The warning from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources comes a week after state testing found some children with elevated levels of lead in their bloodstream. On Friday, DHHR officials announced they are combining forces with the U.S. Environmental Protection to assist the Clarksburg Water System in their efforts to identify and test older homes with lead service lines that may cause elevated lead levels in drinking water. Dr. Ayne Amjad, state health officer and commissioner of DHHR’s Bureau for Public Health, urges residents who live in homes built prior to 1950 to use bottled water and have their children tested for lead poisoning.

COVID-19 Delta variant continues to cause statewide concern

By CHARLES BOOTHE | Bluefield Daily Telegraph Jul 2, 2021 10 hrs ago CHARLESTON — Although only 12 cases of the COVID Delta (India) variant have been reported in the state as of Thursday, that can change quickly, state health officials say. Dr. Ayne Amjad, state Health Officer, said during Gov. Jim Justice’s pandemic briefing Thursday most of those 12 cases were in family units and have been isolated. “But this is a very transmissible variant,” she said. “This number can spike up rather quickly.” The UK variant rose from 200 to 2,000 in the state, she added, so it can happen quickly. “That is also why we encourage people to get vaccinated,” Amjad said, especially with summer travel and holidays.
