Pressure From US, EU Could Destabilize Ethiopia
West aims to punish Ethiopia using Tigray crises ruse to contain Chinese influence in region, say experts. Pressure from the West, particularly the US, on Ethiopia to cease military operations and engage in dialogue with the Tigray People s Liberation Front (TPLF) could prove counterproductive and destabilize the country, analysts are warning.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Endale Belay, a lecturer in the Ethiopian Civil Service University, said the US and the EU have been threatening sanctions and other coercive measures in a bid to force Ethiopia to return political space to now-defunct TPLF.
Last week the US Senate and foreign ministers of G7 countries the world s seven advanced economies passed separate resolutions to put pressure on Ethiopia. Earlier the UN Security Council met four times but failed to arrive at a consensus to take punitive measures against Ethiopia
WHO Regional Director for Africa wraps up visit to Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, 20 April 2021 – The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, just concluded a week-long visit to Ethiopia to acknowledge the country’s efforts to sustain essential health services alongside the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, learn about the progress and challenges in the health response to the humanitarian situation in northern Ethiopia, and reaffirm WHO’s commitment to support these efforts.
Dr Moeti met with H.E. President Sahle-Work Zewde and discussed collaboration on promoting universal health coverage. She applauded the government’s early proactive efforts against COVID-19, which helped keep the pandemic under control during much of last year. In the past three months, UNICEF has reached a total of 1,583,723 people with safe water supply for personal use through the rehabilitation of non-functional water systems, water treatment, and water trucking throughout the country. Of these, 641,976 people have been reached in Tigray Region.
Some 38,758 in people in Tigray were reached through the 22 active Mobile Health and Nutrition Teams (MHNTs), out of whom 11,594 were children who received medical consultations, nutrition services, and immunization.
Since the beginning of its response in Tigray, UNICEF has delivered 1,093.4 metric tons of multi-sectoral supplies to nine partners (including regional bureaus) with a total value of US$2.5 million.
