The Saskatchewan Health Authority is going to school … to deliver COVID-19 vaccinations.
In a media release Tuesday, the provincial government said the SHA will be giving shots to students in June but exact dates remain up in the air.
The SHA and local education officials will finalize the dates and then communicate them to parents through individual schools.
Derek Miller, the SHA’s executive director of infrastructure management, said during a media conference Tuesday high schools are being prioritized, but all schools will be involved before the three-week campaign is finished.
“We won’t see that we’ll get everybody done on one day or a couple of days,” Miller said. “It’ll be sequenced in each of the areas based on the resources that are available and that allow us to complete all of the schools before the school year is out.”

The COVID-19 variant of concern first identified in Brazil is gaining a foothold near Saskatchewan’s border with Alberta.
The P.1 variant has established itself as the second most dominant variant strain, jumping from 51 cases in Saskatchewan a week ago to 92 confirmed through genome sequencing as of Tuesday.

Fifty-three of these confirmed cases are in the north west zone (Lloydminster, North Battleford); 20 are in the south west zone (Swift Current, Maple Creek) and 11 are in the Saskatoon zone.

Saskatchewan’s soaring COVID-19 vaccination plan is shifting into a higher gear.

Health Minister Paul Merriman said at an online news conference that under the second dose schedule, which is dependent on vaccine supply, everyone could be eligible for a second dose by the end of July.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority will begin administering COVID-19 vaccines in elementary and high schools across the province in June. Delivery dates are currently being finalized with local education officials. Once dates are confirmed, they will be communicated directly to parents through individual schools. Saskatchewan has been leading the country with one of the most aggressive vaccination programs and now we are building further on that with the addition of a school-based vaccination program, Health Minister Paul Merriman said. The option of school vaccinations provides greater convenience for parents who want to see their children provided protection through vaccination. There will be more than 90,000 vaccines in total for individuals 12 years of age and older. Children in this age group will only receive the Pfizer brand of vaccine.
