U D P Should Be Ashamed, says PM John Briceño | Channel5Belize com

Jan 27, 2021 John Briceño The Opposition, United Democratic Party, says it will challenge the terminations of about twenty-four terminal workers and other terminations reported across the country.  On George Price Day, the two dozen workers at the Novelo’s Bus Terminal in Belize City were given their walking paper, and a total of sixty employees in the Department of Transport were let go. There are also reports of terminations at the Northern Regional Hospital. The Opposition asserts that these persons were discriminated against because of their political affiliation, but PM Briceño says that the U.D.P.’s case holds no water. PM Briceño says that the U.D.P. should be ashamed of crying wolf because former Prime Minister Dean Barrow made no apologies for firing persons when the U.D.P. became the government.

Ambassadors Appointed by Barrow Administration Refused to Return

Jan 26, 2021 John Briceño The Briceño administration has yet to finalize its list of diplomatic postings.  In fact, for weeks, we have been receiving reports that individuals sent on diplomatic missions at Belizean embassy overseas were refusing to return home, delaying the government’s plan in appointing new ambassadors and other diplomats.  Today, PM John Briceño says that the announcement of new ambassadors will be made shortly.   Prime Minister John Briceño “When it comes to foreign postings, everybody knows the ambassadors work during the term of their government and when the time comes that they need to come home, I am told, I don’t know that a few of them did not want to come back home. And finally the Ministry had to tell them you know, you have to come back home, you are no longer employed by the government of Belize.”

Amilin Mendez, C E O No More | Channel5Belize com

Jan 26, 2021 John Briceño The Prime Minister was also asked about Amilin Mendez. In a press release dated December fourth, the Briceño administration announced Mendez’s appointment as Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Economic Development. The release stated that as C.E.O., Mendez would support the prime minister’s efforts, who is the substantive minister.  But news of her appointment raised eyebrows because Mendez is an ardent U.D.P. supporter who served the now Leader of the Opposition, Patrick Faber, when he was in office. In fact, according to Faber, Mendez called him seeking advice if she should take up the position. However, Mendez’s term as C.E.O. was short-lived because, as PM Briceño told the media today, he has no C.E.O. in the Ministry of Economic Development.

Senate to Ratify UN Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards

Jan 26, 2021 Senate to Ratify UN Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards The Cabinet met today for well over six hours. One of the topics of discussion in the meeting was the ratification of the UN Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards.  It has been in our laws since 1980, but on Thursday, the Senate is expected to ratify the convention.  After today’s meeting, we asked Briceño about the government decision.   Prime Minister John Briceño “What we have done we have made our research to ensure that that does  not happen and we have been assured that will not happen. That is being done simply there are some other negotiations that we are doing, coming forward we will need that so that it can happen.”
