UK investigators grapple with dog-snatching crime wave

Britain is in the throes of a huge dognapping crime wave. The humane societies and rescue charities in Britain say they have never seen anything like it. Animal welfare investigators – pet detectives, really – blame the pandemic. The demand for dogs is massive, but there are so few for sale or adoption. So crime bosses are now puppy brokers. In the United States, the most famous recent case involved Lady Gaga s French bulldogs, Koji and Gustav, stolen from her dog walker, Ryan Fischer, who was shot during the dog robbery in West Hollywood. In Britain, the problem has risen to the level of senior government officials. Home Secretary Priti Patel called the reported rise in pet theft “absolutely shocking”. Police Minister Kit Malthouse vowed action, saying, “It s a sad fact that criminals will seek to profit by this vile crime.”

Around 80 people in Hertfordshire hospitals were stabbing victims

Stab victims accounted for up to 80 admissions to Hertfordshire hospitals last year, figures suggest. Data from NHS Digital shows that in hospitals across Hertfordshire, there were between 20 and 80 admissions of people following an “assault with a sharp object” in 2020. The data between April 2020 and December 2020 is still provisional and likely to change, making it difficult to confirm a precise number of admissions at this point. In Hertfordshire, no fewer than 11 admissions were for under-25s, while 56 were for those older. This compares to between 21 and 87 admissions the year before. Across England and Wales, there were 4,100 hospital admissions after attacks involving a sharp object last year, down from 4,800 in 2019.
