Three missteps have brought Singapore to the current Phase Two Heightened Alert. As a result, Singaporeans are “biting the bullet” until three a half weeks later when it is unclear, at this stage, whether things will get much better.
The most ridiculous cockup is surely the emergence of the KTV cluster, which stood at 232 cases as of Saturday July 24. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said this did not in itself cause the P2HA, it was the Jurong Fishery Port cluster (740 cases and growing). Perhaps. But it has not been ruled out that some port workers might have contracted the virus or that there had been contact between KTV hostesses and port/wet market/food centre workers.

SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong urged seniors to get the Covid-19 vaccination and not wait until it is too late, addressing about 200,000 seniors aged 60 and above who have yet to receive their jabs.
In a Facebook post on Saturday (July 24), PM Lee said seniors were at risk of Covid-19 even if they did not go out much as they could catch the virus from friends or family, adding that the disease is dangerous for older people.
He said that Covid-19 is even more dangerous for seniors with other medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure. The vaccine will protect you from Covid-19. Some people may experience side effects, but these are mostly not serious, said PM Lee, 69, who completed his vaccination at Singapore General Hospital on Jan 29.
SINGAPORE - The large number of people here infected with Covid-19 in recent days has been alarming.
It jumped from single digits in the first third of the month to double digits in the week following that, and now for the past four days, it has been above 100.
The multi-ministry task force tackling Covid-19 reacted the day after the number of infections crossed the 100 people mark. Indeed, the number of newly diagnosed infections almost doubled from 87 on July 18 to 163 on July 19.
So, people here are now faced with four weeks of tightened measures.
While “the number of new cases in the community has increased from 127 cases in the week before to 883 cases in the past week” sounds scary, a closer look at the numbers tell a somewhat different story.
