The recent appointment of former Labour MP Deborah Schembri as the new director-general for the Malta Developers Association has raised a few eyebrows.
The ink on (former PN MP) Marthese Portelli’s resignation had barely dried when news of Portelli’s move to a key post at the Chamber of Commerce triggered a lightning-quick change of guard.
The MDA, one of Malta’s most powerful lobbies, can thus boast of engaging the services of two former Members of Parliament, both of them with extensive knowledge of the Planning Authority.
While Portelli had been the PN’s representative on the PA board – voting, among others, against the case officer’s recommendation to refuse a Joseph Portelli hotel in Mellieħa – Schembri spent the last few years offering “legal services” to clients.
The daughter of a senior government adviser who was awarded lucrative government contracts even before she graduated, has now resigned.
Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg confirmed to Times of Malta that Adreana Zammit had quit. He said it was her own decision as she felt her work at the ministry was being unfairly targeted due to her father s political standing.
Times of Malta revealed on Monday how Zammit, daughter of Jesmond Zammit, one of Borg’s top advisers was handed a €62,400 contract by direct order to serve as a junior lawyer with the ministry – months before obtaining her warrant.
She was awarded the lucrative contract on October 24, 2019, graduated as a lawyer two months later and only received her warrant in January, according to her own social media posts.

Fort Ricasoli will be rid of massive oil tanks that occupy part of the historic site after parliament approved an alternative site for the tank cleaning company.
The fort in Kalkara lies at the mouth of the Grand Harbour and part of it is used as an oil tank cleaning facility by Ricasoli Port Facility Ltd.
However, he told MaltaToday that he still had to establish the facts surrounding the case.
The Times of Malta reported on Monday that Adreana Zammit, serving as a junior lawyer, had been awarded a €62,400 contract by the Transport Ministry through a direct order in October 2019, three months before receiving her warrant.
She was also awarded an additional €46,142 direct order in August 2020 for a six-month legal consultation agreement. The contracts earned Zammit at least €108,542.
Adreana Zammit is the daughter of Jesmond Zammit, Ian Borg s top adviser within his ministry.
Speaking to MaltaToday outside parliament, Abela said that he only got to know of the case from the media report on Monday.
