Progress hailed as Stormont agrees to reopening of indoor hospitality

Following the virtual meeting of the Stormont Executive to review the latest raft of Covid-19 rules, it was agreed that from Monday May 24 indoor hospitality can resume while people will be able to meet inside private homes for the first time this year. Six people from no more than two households will be able to meet in a private dwelling and stay overnight. All tourism accommodation will also be able to reopen on May 24. A limit on the size of outdoor gatherings will increase to 500 – a number that will also apply to the number of spectators able to attend sporting fixtures.

Byrne warned ministers over Covid rules confusion months before Storey funeral

By Press Association 2021 Coronavirus – Mon May 17, 2021 Northern Ireland’s police chief wrote to Stormont ministers early in the Covid pandemic expressing concerns about a lack of clarity in Covid-19 regulations. In the April 2020 letter, Simon Byrne questioned the appropriateness of continuing to ask his officers to enforce health regulations, suggesting that health and safety officials or council wardens should be taking on the role. He warned that asking police to step outside their “traditional” enforcement role risked “medium term consequences for public confidence”. The document has been obtained by the PA news agency through a Freedom of Information request. The letter was sent to Health Minister Robin Swann, and copied to First Minister Arlene Foster, deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Justice Minister Naomi Long, two-and-a-half months before the funeral of former IRA leader Bobby Storey.
