Climate change is back in the spotlight as a growing number of groups urge the Morrison government to commit to net zero emissions by 2050.
Business leaders, scientists and government department officials have appeared before a parliamentary hearing looking at enshrining the target in legislation.
The climate change bill is not supported by the federal government but a broad coalition of stakeholders believe it is a sensible path forward.

Independent MP Zali Steggall, who put forward the private member s bill, said it was time for politicians of all persuasions to address climate change policies. The government and especially the minister is, with respect, at the moment, playing politics with our future, she said.
Senior federal ministers have not endorsed the Nationals plan to use more coal-fired power to help create manufacturing jobs. The party yesterday released a 20-page document aiming for an ambitious target of 800,000 manufacturing jobs in 15 years. It included building more coal and gas-fired power stations to lower energy costs, setting up and Office of Regional Manufacturing in Gladstone and Newcastle, tax incentives, as well as taking more action on trade. The Nationals are calling for more coal-fired power stations to be built as part of a plan to create manufacturing jobs. The Nationals have admitted there was no modelling done on how to reach the 800,000 job target, saying it was a goal based on reaching 10 per cent of Australians employed in manufacturing.
