The Botswana Sectors of Educators trade Union (BOSETU) notes that the 2021/2022 budget proposals were made under very challenging times due to the COVID 19 pandemic. As a trade union we note further, that Botswana economy and the entire world was and still is adjusting and responding to the biggest shock of this century, which is COVID-19. We have no doubt as a trade union that, the pandemic has had many socio – economic impacts that include low economic to negative growth of most sectors of the economy, increased rates of unemployment especially for the youth, poverty and balance of payment decline.
We note further that it is on record that Botswana’s economy has declined by almost 25 percent in period of March to June 2020, which period covers the longest national lockdown in April 2020. We make this commentary on the education sector budget well aware that the education sector was not spared in terms of the impact, as budgets had to be readjusted to accommodate the COVID 19 r
Textbooks for Classes Three, Four : Evaluation Committee Begins Selection Process
The session was opened yesterday February 15, 2021 by the Minister of Basic Education.
Members of the National Council for the Approval of Textbooks and Didactic Materials are currently in their 19th session to evaluate textbooks for Classes Three and Four, primary pupils in Cameroon. The session which began yesterday February 15, 2021 is aimed at selecting the best textbooks for Classes Three and Four Primary school pupils to be used during the next school year as adopted in the new pedagogic approach. While opening the session, the Minister of Basic Education, Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, called on members of the Council to effectively carryout their duty in ensuring that Cameroonians have high quality books that are affordable. Despite being the movers behind Constitution Amendment Bill, 2020 (Bill No. 14 of 2020), which seeks to stop partisan floor crossing, the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), is on an aggressive recruitment drive.
The BDP is said to have gone behind enemy lines, casting its fishing net into the Alliance for Progressive (AP) pond, hoping to catch a big fish.
However, the fish they were reportedly after, AP’s Vice President (VP), Wynter Mmolotsi, wriggled free.
According to a source from within the ruling party, President, Mokgweetsi Masisi, personally tried to lure Mmolotsi back into the BDP fold at the weekend.
