The controversy around the web series Tandav reached the Supreme Court of India where the makers and cast members petitioned for judicial protection from arrest after multiple FIRs were filed against them. The top court, however, denied interim protection to the makers and asked them to approach the High Court.
Reacting to this piece of news, actress Konkona Sen Sharma on Twitter stated that the entire cast and crew were aware of the show’s content so why not just arrest everyone. She retorted, Almost all involved in the show have read the script and signed the contract! Let s arrest the whole cast and crew?
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to grant interim protection from arrest to makers of web series ‘Tandav’, who are seeking quashing of FIRs against them for hurting religious sentiments, while observing that “freedom of speech and expression is not absolute”.
A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, R Subhash Reddy and M R Shah turned down the plea made by senior advocates Fali S Nariman, Mukul Rohatgi and Siddharth Luthra to stay the FIRs, but said the petitioners could approach other fora, including the trial court, for relief. The court said a person cannot claim “an absolute right to freedom of speech and expression” and it is subject to restrictions.

Konkona Sensharma is the latest celebrity who has reacted to the Supreme Court s verdict on Tandav row. The Supreme Court recently refused to grant relief to the makers and actors of Tandav over criminal cases lodged against them in multiple states. Konkona, in a tweet, said if the cast and crew will also be arrested since they read the script before signing the contract. The Amazon Prime Video series, Tandav, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, is at the centre of a controversy for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

Tandav director, Ali Abbas Zafar and others seeking to quash the FIRs filed against them. Instead, the court asked them to approach High Courts across the country for anticipatory bail.
The court also issued notices to Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and other states, in the petition filed by the director and producers seeking the clubbing of FIRs lodged against them. Several FIRs and written complaints have been filed against the director, writer, producer and actor of the Amazon Prime Video original show titled, Tandav for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of Hindus.
