Staff and residents at Heart of America Medical Center Haaland Estates have joined with HAMC Johnson Clinics to celebrate American Heart Month in February.
They’re also inviting the communities they serve to join in the fun.
Staff and residents have participated in group exercises and challenges to keep their hearts healthy such as planning a menu for healthy eating and dancing to favorite music.

Helen Austin, a resident of Heart of America Medical Center’s long-term care unit, celebrates her 100th birthday wearing a crown, sash and a smile.
Residents and staff at Heart of America Medical Center’s long-term care unit know Helen Austin for her smile.
Austin’s usual smile grew bigger late in January, when the unit helped her celebrate her 100th birthday.
“Helen is a very kind lady who wants everybody happy,” said Shelly Block, HAMC’s activities director. “She’s always got a smile on her face.”
COVID-19 vaccine arrives in Pierce County

Late in December, Heart of America Medical Center personnel received and administered the first of several doses of vaccine for COVID-19 that would later extend to care center and high-risk patients and the community.
“The first round was for healthcare workers and any employee at HAMC. That was on Dec. 23,” said Darcie Rose, marketing director at the facility Dec. 31.
Rose said the next round of vaccinations went to patients in the facility’s long-term care center and residents of assisted living center Haaland Estates.
