April 21, 2021Last week, I criticized a recent report from the American Press Institute and the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. That report made a number of bold claims about the American public and what it said was a widespread lack of support for core journalistic values like transparency, oversight, and giving voice to the less powerful. Among those claims: Only 29% of Americans believe that “a good way to make society better is to spotlight its problems.” Just 44% of Americans support the journalistic value of transparency. Only half 50% of Americans support the journalistic value of giving voice to the less powerful.

(AP) A former Louisiana sheriff’s deputy has been sentenced to life in prison for raping and sexually assaulting three girls, all less than 11 years old. Judge Michael Canaday ordered 34-year-old David Monceaux to serve two life terms and a 50-year sentence consecutively, the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office said in a news release. The terms are without probation, parole, or suspension of sentence, News agencies report that Monceaux was convicted April 9 and sentenced Thursday on two counts of first-degree rape and three of sexual battery of a juvenile. His youngest victim was 4 years old.

(AP) - Listening intently behind the camera, Jason Theriot has recorded more than 200 World War II veterans as part of a two-decade passion project to document their oral histories before they are all gone. He’s hoping to find even more. “I had an idea to interview my grandfather, maybe some of his friends, about their World War II experiences and write a short book about them,” Theriot said. “I had taken journalism at LSU and I had a niche for writing and had a bit of an obsession about World War II going back to when I was a little kid.”
