James Pfister: President George Washington s farewell: domestic policy

James W. Pfister George Washington, of course, was the first president under our current Constitution, who took office in 1789 for two four-year terms. On Sept. 19, 1796, in contemplation of his retirement, he published a Farewell Statement of over 6,000 words in a newspaper about five blocks from the Executive Mansion in Philadelphia, the American Daily Advisor. He had worked on it for over five years, writing and rewriting it. (John Avlon, Washington’s Farewell, 2017.) Washington was a charismatic president, who united the nation and the people. Upon his death in 1799, the future chief justice, John Marshall, his protégé, famously described him before Congress as: “First in war, First in peace, First in the hearts of his countrymen.” This column will deal with domestic policy; next week we’ll compare the statement with President Joe Biden’s foreign policy.
