Strategic Soldier receives Army astronaut device

An Army astronaut has received one of the rarest military uniform devices. Col. Andrew “Drew” Morgan received the Army astronaut device from Lt. Gen. Daniel Karbler, commander of Space and Missile Defense Command, during a May 5 ceremony at the National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. “Army astronauts are more than astronauts,” Karbler said. “They represent the Army, serving as ambassadors to the public. NASA has long recognized the skills and qualities of military astronauts. “Col. Morgan represents the ‘human element’ of Army space capabilities, like so many SMDC Soldiers around the world.” Morgan, along with Army astronaut Lt. Col. Anne McClain are the only active duty Soldiers who have received the device, considered by many to be one of the rarest qualification devices a Soldier can receive.

Hudson Reporter American Legion POW/MIA Recognition Day for Douglas O’Neill Dear Editor: Pilot Douglas Lee O’Neill and four other crewmen were flying between Da Nang and Quang Tri City on April 3, 1972, in South Vietnam, when their helicopter was shot down. It has been 49 years since we last heard from Douglas. He is the only service member from Hudson County listed as an MIA from the Vietnam War. This is an annual vigil sponsored by The American Legion Bayonne Post 19 Family and will be held on Saturday, May 23rd , next to the 8th street diner, starting at 9:00 AM. The Douglas O’Neill Remembrance Day is for all Veterans and citizens. Over past few years the POW/MIA issue has been kept alive mostly by veterans organizations around the country, we urge all our citizens to join us in remembering Douglas and all the other thousands listed as MIA, who’s families await their return from World War II to present day. 11 JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. – Two Soldiers from the U.S. Army Reserve’s 99th Readiness Division are helping prove that Broadway’s award-winning “Hamilton,” a song-and-dance retelling of the nation’s founding, isn’t that name’s only tie to musical excellence. Staff Sgt. Sheri Muneno of the 78th Army Band detachment stationed at Fort Totten, New York, and Staff Sgt. Timothy Stuart of the 380th Army Band stationed at Fort Eustis, Virginia, are among the latest recipients of the Colonel Finley R. Hamilton Outstanding Military Musician Award. “Prior to joining the Army Reserve, I was the flute instructor at the Army School of Music,” Muneno said. “I try to bring my knowledge I have teaching flute and teaching music to the unit, and I try to contribute in any way musically that I can.”
