Biden stopped one Trump migrant policy, but another one is doing harm

Sarah Armstrong, Sean Horgan, and Steve Schrader InsideSources.com As military veterans, we’ve seen firsthand the good that the United States can do when it lives up to its ideals. But we’ve also seen the damage it can do when it falls short. Our country has extraordinary power both to help and to harm. This is certainly true on the southern border, where every day the U.S. government chooses either to provide protection to refugees or to inflict further suffering on them. Unfortunately, under President Donald Trump, it opted to do the latter much more often than not.

Veteran Groups Call on President Biden to Swiftly and Safely Evacuate Afghan Allies

May 10, 2021 Related Campaigns & Topics NEW YORK Veterans for American Ideals (VFAI) today released a letter from fifteen veteran-led organizations calling on President Biden to swiftly evacuate the over 17,000 Afghans in the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program as a central element of our military withdrawal from Afghanistan. “As we prepare to bring America’s longest war to a close, we cannot abandon the Afghans who faithfully served alongside American troops,” said Director of Veterans for American Ideals Chris Purdy. “For all intents and purposes, these are veterans. They have saved American lives.  They deserve to be treated with the same dignity and respect as any combat soldier. The clock is ticking on the President’s commitment to withdraw by September 11; we must honor our commitments to our allies now.”

Advocates say that the Biden administration is moving far too slowly to protect tens of thousands of Afghans whose lives are in mortal danger because of their association with the U.S. and Western organizations and that action must be taken now before the last troops pull out as scheduled in four months.
