Music Executive Demmette Guidry Has a Stake in the legacy of Black Music (Image: W & W PR) The Black American Music Association (BAM) was founded by veteran music executives Michael Mauldin and Demmette Guidry with a mission to preserve, protect, and promote the legacy and the future of authentic Black American music as an indigenous art form. BAM provides music industry professionals, creators, scholars, and music industry stakeholders with opportunities that will help empower future generations through professional training, education, preservation, financial literacy and advocacy. In part one of a two-part interview, BLACK ENTERPRISE spoke to Demmette Guidry about BAM’s nonprofit arm, how transparent an upcoming awards show will be, and how the Black American Music Association will play an integral part in the future of Black music.

Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame Announced With First 3 Inductees

There are separate male and female categories in both hip-hop and mainstream (the Walk of Fame’s term to describe R&B that is not hip-hop). But there’s just one combined male/female category for legacy artists, gospel and music & entertainment moguls. (The legacy artist award is designed for artists who began their careers prior to 1980. The other categories are for artists who have been active for at least 25 years.) There is no jazz category, nor are there designated categories for groups or duos. As a result, three groups or duos OutKast, Run-D.M.C. and Public Enemy are vying for the male hip-hop award.

Black Music & Entertainment Walk Of Fame Nominees To Be Announced Tonight

First of its kind event will honor influential people across history. Published February 18th Written by BET Staff The Black American Music Association (BAM) and Georgia Entertainment Caucus (GEC) are slated to host a star-studded private reception to announce the nominees for the inaugural class of the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame (WOF). The first of its kind event will honor some of the most influential Black artists and entertainers in American history and feature speeches and presentations of the nominees. Additionally, a special performance by Jac Ross will take place. The first class of nominees will officially be inducted in June during Black Music Month at a formal ceremony in Atlanta. They will be permanently installed in the historic downtown area on the sidewalks of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Northside Drive.
