The Dunes Sagebrush Lizard did not vote in November’s presidential election, but it had a lot riding on the outcome. In the coming months, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will decide whether to list the lizard as endangered a designation that would make it an offence even to disturb its habitat.
This matters a lot to the lizard. But it also matters to the drillers and frackers of southeastern New Mexico and western Texas, home both to the shinnery oak dunes in which the lizard lives but also to the shale rocks of the Permian, the world’s most prolific oilfield.

The Paris pact isn’t the only global climate agreement President-elect Joe Biden plans to join during his first days in office.
Biden can, and likely will, also begin implementing a lesser-known global climate deal to restrict potent greenhouse gas refrigerants known as hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs. The Obama administration also helped negotiate that deal, known as the Kigali Amendment, which would set the United States and the world on a path to phase down HFCs over the next several decades.
The chemicals, used in refrigerators and air conditioners, are greenhouse gases thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide, though they remain in the atmosphere for a shorter time. If governments meet the goals of the Kigali agreement, it could avoid up to half a degree Celsius of warming by the end of the century, scientists have projected.

As negotiations continue on a year-end government funding bill as well as a new round of coronavirus relief spending, bad energy policy is looking to hitch a ride. The zombie Manchin-Murkowski energy bill, which we call the American Energy Bureaucracy Act, has staggered back into the picture. In the fall, the bill got even worse after an agreement was reached to enrich big corporations at the expense of small businesses and individual consumers. A marriage of corporate bootleggers and green Baptists, with regular Americans forced to foot the bill.
