You can now take virtual tours of historic Egyptian archaeological sites

SHARE If you fancy a tour of an Egyptian tomb or a visit to a Mamluk mosque, it s now possible from the comfort of your own home. A new digital platform titled Preserving Egypt s Layered History has launched online, thanks to the Google Arts and Culture organisation and its collaboration with the American Research Centre in Cairo. The project brings together a rich collection of videos, stories and tours, from the world s oldest Coptic monastery to exploring Egypt s Jewish cemeteries. The site also allows a 3D tour of the tomb of Menna, an 18th-dynasty field scribe in the Theban Necropolis in Upper Egypt.

With school trips cancelled, are interactive online museum tours the answer?

Fascinating faces: two brother mummies dated to about 1800 BC, in Manchester Museum Today I’ve spent my morning exploring Egypt. I started with a tour of the tomb of Menna, a farm overseer who lived over 3,500 years ago in Luxor’s West Bank. After that I nipped over to Alexandria to visit the 4-7th Century BCE Roman ruins, before rounding out my tour in a 14th Century mosque in Cairo.  As you’ve probably guessed by this point, this wasn’t a physical tour of Egypt, but a virtual one. Quite apart from the distances travelled in a morning, global travel restrictions thanks to Covid have made the very idea of visiting another country feel distant at the moment.
