Sky News host James Morrow says a government and a president who treat all opposition as a threat will inevitably, eventually, head in the direction of "tyranny".
His comments come after President Joe Biden made remarks in a media conference in which he said those who wish to "take on the government" with weapons might need "F-15s and maybe some nuclear weapons" to have any success.
Mr Morrow said the president's remarks were directed at the "Capitol Hill protesters" who descended on Washington on January 6.
"But the implication that Biden was making was much bigger than that. It was that anyone who was a gun owner even anyone who was a Trump supporter might be ready to feel the full force of the state," Mr Morrow said.
"The president's take was both silly and wrong and betrays a real lack of understanding about how America and the American Constitution works.
