Christa Ludwig, operatic mezzo-soprano with a vast repertoire who never took herself too seriously – obituary

Christa Ludwig in 1978 Credit:  Avalon Christa Ludwig, the mezzo-soprano, who has died aged 93, started out singing for cigarettes in post-war Berlin and ended up one of the world’s leading exponents of opera and leider. During one of the longest and most distinguished careers on the operatic stage, Christa Ludwig made her debut in Frankfurt in 1946 as Prince Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus and gave her farewell performance in Vienna in 1994, as Klytemnestra in Strauss’s Elektra. Her repertoire ranged from Monteverdi to Berg and she sang Brunnhilde, Isolde, Kundry, Ortrud, as well as Cherubino, Leonora, Rosina, Octavian and the Marschallin. There were few mezzo soprano roles she did not master, and she threw in a good many soprano parts as well. Her voice, admirably free and full of warmth, was hardly affected by the passage of time, while her artistry only improved.
