Simple definitions for concepts like “good” and “evil” or “us” and “them” can become fixed tenets with some active citizenship. Can we agree that “us” means all of us who cherish democracy? We can agree, I believe, that those who worship profit over humanity belong in the “them” category. It’s a choice; a malleable trait (call me Polyanna!). Defining “good” and “evil” will require a national debate. Let’s take our cue from two of our most astute observers and create the psycho-spiritual space to climb from our national trauma to redemption.

Photo by Rahmya Trewern | The State News When James Henson was younger, he idolized the famous civil rights group known as the Black Panther Party. Now, he is working to establish his own chapter of Young Black Panther Party out of Lansing. Henson, a 22-year-old former student at Lansing Community College, was inspired to act after the protests that occurred in the wake of the killing of George Floyd in police custody. Henson created the party, which he describes as a team, in early June 2020. Besides himself, the party consists of four other leaders that Henson said are in different parts of the United States.

The narratives they ve added to American storytelling have shifted perspectives and prompted fresh conversations; their writing has shaped how the Black experience is viewed and understood in America by readers of all races and backgrounds. In the 19th century, African American literature was driven by narratives of slavery, many told from the perspective of escaped slaves such as Harriet Jacobs or Frederick Douglass. In the 1920s, as Black artists and intellectuals emerged following the Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance produced a generation of authors who addressed issues of racism and segregation. Mary E. Baker  If you re a Brockton resident you might be familiar with the Mary E. Baker school. The Baker school is named after Mary E. Baker, the first African-American to work at Brockton City Hall. She was an advocate for affordable housing and racial integration in education. She helped establish two affordable housing complexes in Brockton and assisted with the integration of Brockton High School. Baker herself graduated from Brockton High school in 1941, going on to get her undergraduate degree from UMass Boston and her master s in education from Cambridge College. In 2008 the city of Brockton honored her by naming a freshly built school after her, the first African American woman to be so honored.
