The Shadow Fold is real, and it’s dark as hell. The first full trailer for
Shadow and Bone, the Netflix series based on the books by Leigh Bardugo, is here, and it’s just as impressive and epic as anyone could have wished. It’s a perfect introduction to the series’ world, full of dark and light magic, mysterious powers, and the question of how a humble mapmaker has light for blood.
Shadow and Bone is based on Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy and Six of Crows duology, though this trailer is largely focused on Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) as she’s swept into the world of General Kirigan (Ben Barnes) after her powers are revealed during a deadly attack. When creatures within the Shadow Fold threaten the life of her childhood friend Mal Oretsev (Archie Renaux), Alina unwittingly unleashes a “searing” light which brings her to Kirigan’s attention. “You and I are going to change the world,” he purrs to her.

Shadow And Bone, Netflix’s adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s “Grishaverse” novels, has become one of the streaming site’s most anticipated upcoming shows. The series doesn’t come out till April 23, but fans of the novels can now have a sneak peek in the newly released teaser.
The teaser introduces heroine Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), who discovers she has a mystical power that’ll become instrumental in helping her country. During the interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Eric Heisserer shared: “These photos offer a glimpse into the expansive, textured world Leigh created in her books. We worked tirelessly to craft a lived-in feel for fictional lands like Ketterdam and Ravka, with invented languages, uniforms, currency, and artistic choices from set design to costuming. You’re immersed in the Grishaverse when you read, and it’s our hope that both new and existing fans have that same feeling when they watch the show.”
“
Shadow and Bone takes place in a very different kind of fantasy world,” added author and executive producer Leigh Bardugo. “Think Imperial Russia, not Medieval England, repeating rifles instead of broadswords. It’s a story about the people who have been told how much they don’t matter proving how much they do. And it’s been incredible to see that story take shape on such an epic scale, the battles, the magic, but also the relationships between the character
