The creation of the new district of Malerkotla in Punjab is a reflection the divisive policy of the Congress , Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said today, hitting out at the Amarinder Singh government. Any distinction based on faith and religion is contrary to the spirit of India s Constitution. Mr Singh on Friday had declared Malerkotla as the 23rd district of Punjab while announcing several projects for the development of the historic city, about 131 km from Chandigarh. Malerkotla was carved out Sangrur district.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday announced the creation of Malerkotla, a new district in his state. It has been carved out of the state s only Muslim-majority town, 35 km from Sangrur district. Adjoining Amargarh and Ahmedgarh will also be part of Punjab s 23rd district, according to the announcement during an event on Eid-ul-Fitr. On the occasion of Eid, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday announced that the long-pending demand of people has been fulfilled as Malerkotla will be the 23rd district of the state. It will be the state’s only Muslim-majority town from Sangrur district. The adjoining sub-divisions of Malerkotla Amargarh and Ahmedgarh will also form part of Punjab’s 23rd district. Taking to Twitter Captain said the state govt is happy to share that on the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, it has announced Malerkotla as the newest district in the state.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday declared Malerkotla as the 23rd district of the state while announcing a slew of projects for the development of the historic city. He made these announcements during the state-level celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr held virtually in view of the pandemic situation.
On the occasion, Amarinder Singh underscored India s secular character, which he said was manifested in the defeat of communal forces in the recent Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Friday announced that Malerkotla, a Muslim-dominated area, would be the 23rd district of the state.
He made these announcements during the state-level celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr , held virtually in view of the pandemic situation.
Malerkotla was established in 1454 by Sheikh Sadruddin-i-Jahan of Afghanistan. Subsequently, the State of Malerkotla was established in 1657 by Bayazid Khan. It was later merged with other nearby Princely States to create the state of Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU).
During the reorganisation of states in 1956, the territory of the erstwhile state of Malerkotla became part of the State of Punjab.
