HIGH POINT, N.C. Amari Jones was barely given a chance to live past his first 24 hours, but five years later, he has defied the odds.
WFMY News 2 first introduced you to Amari back in 2016, when he was eight months old. He was born a micro-preemie, weighing less than a pound.
He was hooked up to breathing tubes, underwent multiple surgeries and spent a total of 120 days in the Forsyth Medical NICU.

Capacity limits and lower volunteer turnout for donations are a few reasons why there is a blood shortage. The need for blood is constant and we re always going to need blood for various procedures, but especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, said Alissa Haight Aguda, account manger with the American Red Cross. Fourty-percent of the blood in ordinary times comes from businesses and schools, but because a lot of businesses and schools are not in right now, we rely on those community donations, so, it s essential patrons come out.
Romelo Jones Jr. and Belinda Hart died in the 600 block of Pulaski Street in Flint.
âIâm just thinking about all the peaceful times I had with him. The long nights, up until 6 a.m. I changed his first diaper,â said Romelo Jones, the babyâs father.
Hart was an autoworker.
âIâm angry to tears because she was so loved. We stood on the strike line this summer together,â said Claudia Perkins-Milton, the babyâs great-grandmother.
Police said Romelo and Hart were not the intended targets of the drive-by shooting.
âThis is our son right here. And they took him away from us and itâs hard. He didnât have anything to do with this,â Jones said.
