Dr Gregor Smith has been confirmed as Scotland s chief medical officer (CMO) on a permanent basis.
The former GP stepped in as interim CMO in April when Catherine Calderwood quit after breaking lockdown rules.
Dr Smith has played a prominent role during the pandemic and is a regular fixture in daily televised briefings.
Meanwhile, Caroline Lamb - who is currently managing the contact tracing and vaccine programmes - has been named chief executive of NHS Scotland.
And former NHS Grampian chief Prof Amanda Croft has been appointed the Chief Nursing Officer, to take over from Prof Fiona McQueen who retires in March.

Ms Lamb, who is expected to take up her post in January, began her career working as a chartered accountant in London before moving to Scotland and taking up management roles in the NHS.

She was chief executive of NHS Education for Scotland before joining the Scottish Government last year as director of digital reform and service engagement in the health and social care directorates.
As well as overseeing the Covid-19 vaccination programme across Scotland, she also has responsibility for Test and Protect.
Her predecessor Malcolm Wright stood down as NHS Scotland chief executive for health reasons in May and John Connaghan, chief performance officer in NHS Scotland and director of delivery and resilience, took on the role on an interim basis.
Amanda Croft
The Scottish Government has named Professor Amanda Croft as the country’s next chief nursing officer.
Qualifying as a registered nurse in 1992, Professor Croft (pictured above) went on to become the director of nursing, midwifery and allied health professions and then chief executive at NHS Grampian health board.
Since 2016, Professor Croft has been a visiting professor at the Robert Gordon University school of nursing and midwifery in Aberdeen.
She is expected to start in her CNO role in February 2021, taking over from Professor Fiona McQueen, who is retiring in March.
