But as we ring in the new year, health officials say we can’t let our guards down.
January 15th will mark one year of Covid-19 being in the U.S.
Klamath County Public Health’s Valeree Lane says it’s best to not to gather with people outside of your household.
But if you do, you should social distance, wear a mask, and wash your hands frequently.
“We’re probably seeing at least a 6th generation of contagion from an event that happened over Labor Day weekend and it’s the gift we don’t want to give,” said Lane.
But for our furry friends, it can be a rough night.
Medford’s SoHumane says the noises and vibrations from fireworks can be very disruptive for our pets.
It says the day after Fourth of July and New Years is always busy for animal control with multiple calls about pets missing or found.
To ensure your pet’s safety and comfort, keep them indoors, if possible.
An enclosed space reduces the risk of animals getting out.
“It’s not uncommon for dogs in a state of panic, that wouldn’t normally necessarily try to escape their yard or go over an under fencing, for them to dig out or jump or climb over the fencing,” said Ryan Johnson, operations manager at SoHumane.
MEDFORD, Ore. A Medford non-profit is asking for the community’s help to add more pallet shelters for the homeless.
Earlier this month, ‘Rogue Retreat’ says an anonymous donor gave them $35,000 to create 10 more pallet shelters.
That’s in addition to the 14 they have right now.
The shelters are temporary living spaces for the homeless located at the non-profit’s ‘urban campground’ off Biddle road.
Executive Director of Rogue Retreat, Chad McComas, says 10 new shelters will cost a little over $70,000 with shipping.
The non-profit is still $11,000 short.
“They actually have a little spot that’s there own now with a door that locks. And they can leave their things there. They don’t have to worry about them being stolen. Now, they can start putting their energy on not where they’re going to sleep, not where they’re going to put their things, but what do I do now to move forward,” he said.

MEDFORD, Ore. A new and potentially more infectious strain of Covid-19 was identified in the U.S. on Tuesday.
In an exclusive interview with NBC5 News, Oregon Health Authority Director Patrick Allen says it won’t affect current vaccine distribution plans or the vaccine’s efficacy.
“While this variation makes the disease easier to transmit, it doesn’t appear to make its course any worse or affect the vaccine. But it’s really early to be able to say that definitively,” said Allen.
As for the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines, Allen says it’s going according to schedule.
About 5,000 doses are being distributed per day, a number he expects to increase for the next several days.
