Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Seven Museums to Reopen in May The Smithsonian announced Friday that it will be reopening seven of its museums along with the National Zoo starting early May, a long-awaited and eagerly anticipated decision since the closing of all of its facilities in November 2020 due to COVID-19. The first facility to reopen will be the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center on Wednesday, May 5. On Friday, May 14, the Smithsonian will be reopening its National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and its Renwick Gallery. Lastly, the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of the American Indian and the National Zoo will reopen on Friday, May 21.

The event began April 23 and continues through May 3 and is described as “the ultimate foodie experience,” supporting local food and beverage businesses including restaurants, bakeries, breweries and wineries. Participants can download a “Digital Saving Pass” on the Visit Montgomery website to access over 50 deals and discounts for food and beverage locations throughout the county. Additionally, MoCo Eats Week will be offering a giveaway program through its Digital Savings Pass where participants will have the chance to win gift cards and “staycation packages.” Each check-in to a participating local eatery will count as one entry to the giveaway.

Public Libraries to Host Financial Literacy Conversation With ‘The Color of Money’ Columnist Michelle Singletary In celebration of National Financial Literacy Month, Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) will be hosting a virtual conversation, “Five Steps to Thrive During a Financial Crisis and Beyond,” with Washington Post’s Michelle Singletary on Saturday, Apr. 24. Singletary, a University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University alumna, writes the award-winning nationally syndicated personal finance column “The Color of Money.” Singletary is a published author of three personal finance books with her latest work, “What to Do with Your Money When Crisis Hits: A Survival Guide,” coming out in May.

Montgomery County Shines in WalletHub’s ‘Most Diverse Cities in America’ Report Three Montgomery County cities were ranked within the top 15 of WalletHub’s report, “2021’s Most Diverse Cities in America” with Gaithersburg at #6, Silver Spring at #7 and Germantown at #12. According to WalletHub, the report is the final installment of their diversity study series, where they determined the final list through combining household diversity and religious diversity with their previous reports on socioeconomic diversity, cultural diversity and economic diversity. The scores were tallied across these five categories for 501 of the largest cities across 13 metrics. In the “Socioeconomic Diversity” category alone, Montgomery County topped the charts with Silver Spring ranked #1, Gaithersburg ranked #2 and Germantown ranked #18. In the “Cultural Diversity” category, Gaithersburg ranked #2, Germantown ranked #3 and Silver Spring ranked #5.
